The festival, running April 28 to May 8, will be officially be the first New York City film festival to offer theatrical screenings since the start of the pandemic in early 2020. New Directors/New Films, the annual spring festival co-presented with The Museum of Modern Art, will mark its 50th anniversary with select in-person screenings. It divided critics upon its debut, but has since come to be widely regarded as one of the best films ever made. The Russian director’s non-linear narrative was released in between his better-known works, Solaris and Stalker. French Exit, the Michelle Pfeiffer-starring satire that closed last fall’s New York Film Festival (FLC’s annual event), will open along with a new restoration of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Mirror.
